Yogurt in Western Europe
Italy / Greece
Italy (Sardinia, Sicily)
Italy has its own variations of yogurt that are part of its cultural heritage, such as Sardinia’s goiddu and Sicily’s mezzoradu.
Greece
Yogurt is commonly called “giaourti” in Greece. The Greek-style condensed yogurt that is strained of whey and famous around the world is called サコーラス. Tarhana is another variation of yogurt unique to Greece, which is made by drying a mixture of fermented sheep milk and wheat flour, and is typically used to make soup by blending with hot water or chicken broth.
